Final Fantasy VII
Disc 1: Costa del Sol to Corel Prison
Costa del Sol
Talk to the dock workers, then head to the lower-right of the screen and go up the stairs. After the cutscenes, go through the doorway right across from where you enter town. The basement has a Stat-Up ItemsTarget: 1, Permanently raise Strength by 1, Tifa's WeaponsTifa's Weapon. Attack: 27; Attack %: 106; Connected Slots: 0; Unconnected Slots: 3; Growth: Double, and AccessoriesAccessory: Nullifies Fire based attacks.
Head down to the beach and talk to Hojo, but stop by the materia shop in the center of town first. If you don’t already have one or more, you can buy Revive Materia from the vendor in the plaza (or Yuffie, if she’s not in your party). This is also the first place you can buy the Status Abnormality ItemsTarget: 1, Remove status abnormality: Petrify item, which should tip you off that you may need it soon.
Path to North Corel
Leave Costa del Sol, then head south, east, and north along the mountain path. At the cave, rest or save, then enter. Talk to the man on the path and keep moving.
Follow the obvious path until you reach the reactor area. Head down, follow the tracks to the lower-right, and save (you’ll have to do some weird mini-game stuff here, and you’ll want to be prepared to come back to this point).
- Leave the save point and head right. Cloud jumps the first break.
- Take the high road to the right. When prompted to jump, do not. Hold left and press Circle repeatedly.
- When Cloud is dangling, press Circle and climb up to get the Aeris's WeaponsAeris's Weapon. Attack: 28; Attack %: 100; Connected Slots: 0; Unconnected Slots: 3; Growth: Double.
- Climb back up and head right for the Barret's WeaponsBarret's Weapon. Attack: 30; Attack %: 100; Connected Slots: 0; Unconnected Slots: 3; Growth: Double chest.
- Return left and take the low road. When you fall, hold right and press Circle to get a AccessoriesAccessory: Protects against Status Abnormality: Poison.
- Continue right, then cut back left when you can take the upper road.
- Get the Restoration ItemsTarget: 1, Restores ALL MP. If you start to fall, press Circle or climb back up.
- Farther left, pick up Transform Materia.
- Head back right and take the low road.
- Talk to your friends. If you want to help Tifa’s date score, make sure she is in your party before heading back left.
- On the next screen, take the upper-right road, cross the bridge, and enter the shack to lower the bridge.
- When you hear birds chirping, you can climb for treasure and a fight, or leave the birds alone to help Tifa’s affection.
- Return to your friends and cross the bridge.
At the fork, go left first. Curve around to the cave with the old miner. Keep talking to him until he repeats himself, then take the Stat-Up ItemsTarget: 1, Permanently raise Strength by 1, Stat-Up ItemsTarget: 1, Permanently raise Spirit by 1, and Restoration ItemsTarget: All, Restores ALL HP/MP at save point or on world map. Remember that he has a bulldozer.
Leave, take the right fork, cross the rope bridge, and enter North Corel.
North Corel
Run toward the bottom of the screen to enter the town and watch Barret get smacked around a little bit.
Talk to everyone and shop if you want, but keep at least 3,000 Gil so you can enter Gold Saucer. If you want a Miscellaneous ItemsA lifetime pass to enter the Gold Saucer, you need 30,000 Gil. If you are playing on an emulator and/or are willing to exploit mini-games later, around 10,000 Gil can be enough.
If you want to level or earn money, leave by the right-most exit and use Ifrit on the enemies outside town. If you have a Fire Materia that can cast Fire 2, link that to an All Materia for significant damage to the enemies in this area. Swap party members with Key ItemsKey Item: Use to change party members at save points and on the world map so one group does not get far ahead of the rest.
When you are done, return to town, leave by the lower-left exit, talk to Barret, and get on the tram.
Gold Saucer
After you get off the tram, remove any useful materia, armor, or accessories from Barret. At the entrance, buy a one-time pass for 3,000 gil (if you’re broke) or a Miscellaneous ItemsA lifetime pass to enter the Gold Saucer for 30,000 gil (if you’re flush). Be aware that getting the most powerful weapons, items, summons, etc requires spending a significant amount of time racing chocobos. So if you want the best stuff, you’ll eventually likely need to buy the Miscellaneous ItemsA lifetime pass to enter the Gold Saucer.
Inside, Barret heads to Wonder Square. You should choose one (and only) person to come with you. While you CAN talk to other folks and add them to your party, you won’t get into any battles, so it’s better if you only take one. That way you can pick up a new character later on.
Chocobo Square
Talk to everyone to learn about chocobo racing. There are six chocobos in each race, and you can pick up to three tickets, but you must guess first and second place.
If you are playing on an emulator, the old save-state trick is to reroll races until the prize list includes Restoration ItemsTarget: 1, Restores ALL HP/MP or Restoration ItemsTarget: 1, Restores ALL MP, then save state before picking a ticket. Watch the race so you know the race outcome, reload and pick the winning ticket. A Restoration ItemsTarget: 1, Restores ALL MP is worth 150 GP, and an Restoration ItemsTarget: 1, Restores ALL HP/MP is worth 200 GP. With 500 GP, you can buy a Chocobo ItemsChocobo Breeding Item from the question-mark prize option.
Wonder Square
Pick up Cait Sith, who comes with Manipulate Materia and Transform Materia. In the arcade, the Mog game can earn you 30 GP the first time. Feed Mog five nuts, wait, then feed the second round three nuts and stop.
The 3D Battler costs 200 Gil. On an emulator, you can quicksave before each action and use that to earn GP. Do not try to continue forever; the old mini-game can bug out after the fourth opponent.
The basketball game is the easiest emulator GP source. Hold Circle for a consistent count, save after successful throws, and reload on misses. This can turn 200 Gil into a lot of GP very quickly.
Ghost Square
At Ghost Square, enter the hotel and read Turtle’s Paradise No. 3 on the wall to your left. You can examine the counter to buy items from Mr. Hangman. The save point costs GP, and I usually do not spend it here.
Speed Square
At Speed Square, talk to Dio. He will mention Sephiroth and ask you to visit Battle Square later. Finish anything else you want first, because it will be a while before you can return.
Corel Prison
After the Battle Square scenes, you end up below Gold Saucer. Junction Cait Sith before battles. There is a ladder up and right that leads down to an empty chest, which you can safely ignore.
Head down through the gate, talk to everyone, then enter the shack on the right for Barret’s backstory. After more scenes, you can leave. The truck cab works as a rest spot if you need it. I recommend saving Barret’s MP for later and having your other characters use Ifrit for random battles.
Talk to Mr. Coats in the truck trailer. The other building sells basic items. Save, then head up and right, avoiding the gate. Continue right until you reach the dump.
If you want the enemy skill Laser, you’ll have to learn it here or wait until Dark Dragon enemies on Disc 3. Remember - you can manipulate enemies to force them to use specific skills on specific characters.
At the dump, junction Barret for a solo fight. Do not equip Cover, and do not bother with Steal. If you have Beta, equip that Enemy Skill Materia. Otherwise, equip the Ifrit Materia. Keep Barret in the back row because his weapon is ranged.
Boss: Dyne
If you learned Beta earlier, this fight is simple. Otherwise, shoot him, use summons, and use limit breaks. Dyne has nothing to steal and cannot be manipulated.
You should receive a ArmorArmor: 2 Connected Slots, 2 Unconnected Slots. After the scenes, you’ll learn that you must win a chocobo race to leave Corel Prison. When Ester leaves you alone, pick up Ramuh Materia from the far-right stall.
For the race:
- Press Select at the start to switch from Auto to Manual.
- Hold L1, L2, R1, and R2 throughout the race.
- Hold Circle about half the time to spend stamina for speed.
- Use Circle again around the log section near the end.
The chocobo follows the course even in manual mode, so don’t worry about steering. Once you win, you receive the buggy and regain control on the world map.
